Health Through Balance
Modern day Maya medicine is an integrated system of natural medicine and healing that springs from ancient Maya civilisation which came into prominence during the classic Maya period (250-900AD). It survived the Spanish invasion, and with some modifications it is still widely practiced today through southern Mexico, Guatemala, western Honduras, El Salvador and Northern Belize.
The Maya medical system centres around restoring and maintaining health through balance between the five sacred elements of earth, water, fire, wind and space. Treatment for restoring these easily disturbed factors is through diet, behaviour, plant and herbal medicine and accessory therapies – such as sweat lodges to cleanse mind and body of disease, reinstating one’s life force and sowing back the tears in the fabric between the physical and non-physical realms.
